Malt is the Backbone of Beer
Malt is the foundation of beer. While hops often get the spotlight, malt provides structure — from color and body to sweetness and alcohol potential. Without malt, beer wouldn’t have its depth, balance, or satisfying mouthfeel.
Different malt types are kilned and roasted at varying temperatures, creating an incredible range of flavors. Light malts bring notes of bread and crackers, while darker malts introduce caramel, chocolate, coffee, and roasted character. The malt bill chosen by the brewer largely defines the beer’s style and personality.
When tasting a flight, pay attention to color and aroma before sipping — malt character often reveals itself visually and on the nose before it hits the palate.
